I really love to just -be- with an artist; witnessing their natural process and connection with their work. Most often, what I do as a director and photographer begins with a relaxed conversation about who my collaborators are and how their journey has informed what they feel called to create. This understanding, to whatever degree they let me in, helps me craft my approach to the visuals.
Such was the case with Mick Johnson, who is a multi-media artist, designer, and actual hair magician. Before filming this short promotional film, we spoke quite extensively about how his fascination with learning to manipulate materials lead him from music, to furniture design, to hair, and beyond. I was lucky enough to experience his personal genius myself, which I filmed and edited into a retro-poppy brand film, complete with a mini logo animation to boot.
